Library happenings

Lake Park Public Library

Thank you to the Friends of the Library for sponsoring their first annual “Light up the Night” Halloween decorating contest.  Cash prizes were given for the top 3 winners.  Take a look at our Facebook page for pictures!  The Lake Park Friends of the Library's "Light up the Night" Halloween decorating contest winners are:

  • First place: Julie Baumgarn! “We liked that there were SO many individual scenes to look at! The witches cooking the cauldron of bones and the skeleton scaling the deck were some of our favorites. You really had a LOT going on out there!”
  • Second place: Josh McClain! “We liked the row of lit trick or treat pumpkins and the total package, but what we REALLY liked was the spotlighted motorcycle with the witch! Very creative!”
  • Third place: Lynette Ehret! “Many lit features, but what really got our attention was the scarecrow guy with the sound effects. The electrocution buzzing with the accompanying strobe light was cool!”

Congratulations to our winners and thank you to all that entered! After judging, we drove around to see other houses with decorations out, even if they didn't enter, and it was fun to see Lake Park getting into the holiday spirit!

New books are arriving every day. One of the books we just added is by a popular author, William Kent Krueger, titled, “The Devil’s Bed”.  The creator of the critically acclaimed, award-winning Cork O'Connor mystery series presents a haunting, atmospheric conspiracy thriller. Locked in a tight battle for reelection, President Clay Dixon knows his best chance for victory is the popularity of his wife, Kate. But the disenchanted First Lady is about to desert him. When an orchard accident seriously injures Kate's father, a retired senator and former vice president, she returns to the family farm in Minnesota to be at his side. Assigned to protect her, Secret Service agent Bo Thorsen soon falls under Kate's spell. Bo suspects that the accident is part of a trap to lure the First Lady home, a trap set by a man named David Moses, an escaped mental patient who once loved Kate. But although Bo and Moses don't realize it, they're caught in a larger web of deadly intrigue spun by a shadowy, seemingly insignificant bureaucratic department within the federal government itself. Racing to find answers before an assassin's bullet kills Kate, Bo comes to understand that when you lie down with the Devil, there's hell to pay. Both ambitious and compelling, The Devil's Bed is sure to thrill and surprise devotees of Cork O'Connor and win new fans alike.

“Proof of Life”: A J. P. Beaumont Novel by J.A. Jance is another mystery from this New York Times bestselling author.  Be careful what you wish for . . . Before he retired, J. P. Beaumont had looked forward to having his days all to himself. But too much free time doesn’t suit a man used to brushing close to danger. When his longtime nemesis, retired Seattle crime reporter Maxwell Cole, dies in what’s officially deemed to be an accidental fire, Beau is astonished to be dragged into the investigation at the request of none other than the deceased victim himself. In the process Beau learns that just because a long-ago case was solved doesn’t mean it’s over. Caught up in a situation where old actions and grudges can hold dangerous consequences in the present, Beau is forced to operate outside the familiar world of law enforcement. While seeking justice for his frenemy and healing for a long fractured family, he comes face to face with an implacable enemy who has spent decades hiding in plain sight.
